Climate and wind: The Tramontana, much like the Mistral, blows strongly from the northwest in this area, which can complicate the Cabo Creus passage. It’s also worth thinking about southeasterly gale force winds around autumn.

The thermal wind off the Spanish coast is not particularly strong in the summer, but it blows constantly from the east and can be strong, causing high swells, in the autumn. Cross La Garde FM (in French) provides the most reliable and up-to-date (3 times a day) weather reports. We believe the best sailing times for yacht hire are from April to June and September to October.

Navigation: Shoals and other danger zones are marked clearly along the Spanish coast.

Ports and anchorages: The Costa Brava has been awarded 39 blue flags for water quality and port infrastructure. Please pay attention to changeable weather conditions, as usually only one side of a port provides protection. Ports offering protection en route to Creus are: Culera, Liansa, Puerto de la Seiva, Rosas, Ampuriabrava. Please note that port fees are expensive compared to France.

Getting there: EasyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, as well as many other charter flight operators offer direct flights to the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza .
